What month will it come out?
Does anyone even know a month that the PS3 may come out in? Spring 2006 is pretty broad, and every Gamestop, etc. store that I go to has no clue.

I saw somewhere that May is possible.

Well, about that...
While I'm sure it's possible for Sony to release their console in Spring, a few things disturb me slightly that make me think they may slip it.

1) We haven't actually seen the PS3, yet. The mock-up we saw at E3 was a plastic casing with nothing inside it. I would be comfortable saying this is the final design for the PS3 if it weren't for...
2) The devkit. The thing is the size of a microwave. How Sony intends to squeeze all that into a tiny little (and sleek-looking, might I add) shell is a mystery to me. Then again, I'm not a large electronics consortium.
3) Price. I have no clue how much this thing is going to cost. I haven't heard any credible sources claim a price, either. They could come out and shock us with a Wal Mart price, but add up all the new technology: you have your Bluray and you have your Cell. No game system has ever launched with this much proprietary, unabashedly new technology. It's almost as if Sony's building a concept car.
4) Bluray vs. HDDVD. I'm not going to lie: I've yet to see anything about either of these that makes me want to run out and redo my entire entertainment setup to accommodate. I can't really figure out why everyone seems in such a hurry to bury DVD, which hasn't even been around that long, comparitively speaking. I worry about the parallels to Betamax that I see and hope Sony isn't repeating past sins.

I just don't know. I still haven't got my 360, so the jury's out on that. I've no doubts I'll get a PS3 alongside my other consoles, but I'm a super-easy sell.

Look forward to January
I am almost positive that your questions on launch date, pricing, etc will be locked in by Sony in an official announcement at the 2006 CES in Vegas, which is January 5-8.
My guess is a console price no higher than $450, an April or May release in Japan, with September or October in the U.S. Again, I have no reliable sources, just a guess.

For Japan not for "US"
Googling tells me this.

March PS3 Launch For Japan, Holiday 2006 For US.

Does it come wth a rootkit?
Why should I trust Sony?

You shouldn't
If you feel that the rootkit has betrayed your trust in Sony, you'd be a fool to give them any money. You should not compromise your moral integrity for a video game system.

No centralized online service for PS3
There will be no centralized online service for PS3, ala XBOX Live.

That right there is going to cost Sony a ton of console sales. I was slightly considering buying a PS3 myself but now after seeing that, no way. I want online gaming and I dont want to have to rely on publishers or developers for online capability that will vary from game to game, if they even have online mode at all.

XBOX 360 it is for me...

yeah, that is strange but ...
i'l probably go with Nintendo for the online community
experience, PS3 will work as a PC with mixed private (clan)
servers and official solutions. There is no doubt that there will
be a PS3 community led by Sony but not the actual game servers
or inning the cash for it.

I also wonder how long MS is going to support the old stuff
when these titles stop bringing in the dollars. :/

What about MMORPG's ??
I was a WoW player for 7 months and looking at the server
difficulties and the overall cost to Blizzard to maintain the
community ... how is MS going to include this into its community
model and maintain those servers? 1 successful game is a huge
task, let alone a series of games. Conclusion, no MMORPG's for
the Xbox.

I can assure you that this is the online model for the future,
think about a WoW style game combined with battlefield or, or,
anything, its going to be big business, thats for sure.

Rootkit, DMR, no Xbox live like online play? No thanks....
After they showed me how sneaky they were with this whole root kit stuff and then act like it wasn't a big deal, that was pretty much the end of that. Besides they don't even have a centralize online play solution. I converted from PS2 to Xbox 360 and ain't looking back. Go Xbox 360!

Pricing
The media and public is worried the PS3 will cost up to $500 which is actually very cheap. A Blu-Ray player alone is worth that much the PS3 will play all forms of CD's DVD's and of course Blu-Ray. And I think is was GameSpot that was predicting game prices to go up to $60 which is also cheap since they will be made on Blu-Ray. People shouldn't be complaining about next-gen technologies being too expensive because Sony is making them as cheap as possible. Money isn't made in creating new technologies and putting them into consoles, it's all about the mass-selling of games, that's where the $25 billion is made. And besides the future is expensive, we have to learn to accept it.

Yes, but...
Nobody is denying that gaming in general is by no means an expensive hobby. Had I saved every dollar I blew on games instead of building a positively massive collection, chances are I'd be driving a Corvette. Heck, I remember when games used to be $75 and up in the 8-bit era. That would be significantly more expensive today. But Sony bucked the trend by releasing the PS1 with games on optical media instead of cartridges, which drove the cost-to-consumer way down, allowing them to put their foot in the door where so many others had failed. Nintendo stuck with cartridges because of perceived strengths, but we all know how that turned out.

By going from a proven, universally accepted standard to something more obscure and cutting edge, Sony is in essence doing what Nintendo did with their consoles by deciding to stick with cartridges. Despite the advantages of the new media format, trying to strongarm the market into accepting Blu-Ray likely won't win them any points. And this isn't the first time Sony's tried to force the direction of the market. Betamax, MD, ATRAC, UMD, the list goes on. While the last three on the list are still around, their uses are highly specialized and not likely to travel very much. MD and ATRAC are on the outs, and it wouldn't surprise me if UMD was only useful on the PSP, even in the future.

$500 for a console is not very cheap. $500 for a computer is very cheap. The reason people buy consoles instead of computers is to have a specialized device at a fraction of the cost. Granted, even if PS3 launches at $800 - and I'm not saying it will - that's significantly cheaper than an equally capable computer system. But in a market where volume is everything, you can't win by overpricing the competition.

The future's only expensive if you take premature leaps to unproven technologies that haven't got a refined manufacturing process to keep the price down. Justifying the price by promising the future won't move inventory.

Why bother?
Why bother?, until this baby(or dog?) lands, and we actually get full working samples to play with, all else is speculation! based on questionable information, and specifications which are subject to change SONY style!
