Short Take: Gigabit Ethernet gets final approval

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers announced final approval of the standard for gigabit-speed Ethernet, the next-generation technology that already is available from many firms. Final ratification, which took place last week, was seen as a foregone conclusion after base specifications were agreed upon. Shipping equipment will work with the finalized standard, according to the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance.
