Short Take: Five companies increase DRAM production

NEC, Toshiba, Hitachi, Fujitsu, and Mitsubishi plan to increase their combined output of 64-megabit DRAM memory chips to 7.5 million units by the end of 1997. That's up from 700,000 units in 1996. At the same time, the five companies, who hold a 40 percent share of the world DRAM market, are cutting back on 16-megabit DRAM production. The price of the higher-capacity DRAM chips will fall from ten times that of 16-megabit DRAM chips to around four times as much by mid-1997, according to a Reuters report.
