Short Take: Clinton lauds Unix inventors
President Clinton awarded the inventors of the Unix operating system and
the C programming language the National Medal of Technology on Tuesday.
Honored were Kenneth L. Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, whose work "stimulated
the growth of the entire computer industry, thereby enhancing American
leadership in the Information Age," the Department of Commerce said. Unix,
invented about 30 years ago, has experienced renewed interest because of
its suitability for Internet applications and the popularity of the
Unix-like Linux operating system.
