Short Take: Clinton lauds Unix inventors

President Clinton awarded the inventors of the Unix operating system and the C programming language the National Medal of Technology on Tuesday. Honored were Kenneth L. Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, whose work "stimulated the growth of the entire computer industry, thereby enhancing American leadership in the Information Age," the Department of Commerce said. Unix, invented about 30 years ago, has experienced renewed interest because of its suitability for Internet applications and the popularity of the Unix-like Linux operating system.
