Short Take: BT to allow developers access to network

British Telecommunications will announce a plan that lets software developers access its protected phone network, according to a Wall Street Journal report, citing Alfred Mockett, president and chief executive officer of BT Global, a unit of BT. BT hopes that access will persuade programmers to create services that run on its public phone network, instead of the Internet. Microsoft and Siemens have helped develop the concept, which will let outside desktop computers communicate with its phone network without risking network security.
