Server problem causes Excite outage

Web portal Excite.com could not be used for several hours this morning because of a hardware problem, according to the company.

The problem primarily affected the site's main start page, Excite.com. Other parts of the site, including its email, search and news services, were accessible if people went directly to the Web addresses where they are hosted.

Since midmorning Pacific time, the site has been accessible intermittently. Personalization features on Excite members' personal home pages, such as stock quotes, weather and bookmarks, were also temporarily down.

"A load balancer that failed prevented proper communication between various servers," said an Excite@Home representative.

One reader wrote in an email that the site has been down since at least 3 a.m. PT.

Excite.com is the Web portal site for high-speed cable Internet service provider Excite@Home.

Excite's News Updates are still off/stopped/stalled/behind by 24+ hours

This is on my "Excite Home Page/Start Page" (your milage may vary)

And not just some of their News Feeds, but all - Associated Press, New York Times, etc

(and forget CBS News, they changed their website couple years ago, and Excite/CBS - one of them - was unable, or unwilling, to make needed adjustments to continue the feed, so CBS News has not had an update via Excite for 2+ years ... ok, yes, the "CBS News Opinion Page" has, for some reason, been able to link updates)

Hummm .....

If Excite continues in this fashion - might have to consider Google's News, or CNET, or (heaven forbid) MSN.
