Interesting
It would be interesting how this merging is going to benefit consumers. They both make good hdd. Although Maxtor's hdd, as reliable and long lasting as they are, tend to be a bit noisier than other brands.

I prefer Western Digital, but I would not hesitate to buy either Maxtor or Seagate if the price is right.

Thank you
Its not suprising that Maxtor had a loss this year with their hard drives failing all the time and the shortening of their warrenty. so far I have gotten three differnt hard drives from Maxtor this year and all three fail after the warrenty is up. the only good thing is Maxtor is pretty cheap. or have good deals. hopfully with this Seagate will not only make them cheaper but more reliable.

More reliable?
We won't use a Seacrate drive in any of our server farms. They
run hot, loud and have a worse record than Maxtor. When they
bought out Conner, they somehow inherited their track record,
and it has not gotten any better. The only drives that seem to
last are from Hitachi (formerly IBM). They ran cool, quiet and
seemed to last longer than any of the others.

Less competition now
I can't see how this is good news.

I agree
But, it looks like there would be nothing stopping it from going
through. The sad part about mergers like this is they generally
pick up each other's weaknesses rather than their strengths.

True
True, there is less competition. But that does not have to be a 100% bad thing. It is always possible that something good could come from this.

My Dead Maxtor Drives
My fourth Maxtor drive died a couple of months ago. That one lasted a year. (My old Seagates and WDs are still chugging along.) I decided to replace it with a Seagate which has a 5 year warranty. So far, it's running quiet and cool with no problems.

I take this announcement as good news. And I hope Seagate can do something to improve the reliability of Maxtor drives! ...although, I won't be buying any more of 'em for quit a while;)
