In a video interview at the Syndicate Conference in San Francisco, Flickr co-founder Catrina Fake said the site early on took a
different approach toward photo sharing than other photo sites already out there.
"Photo sharing was seen as a loss leader for photo finishing services. The business was all about a funnel to get people to spend their money on printing. Photo sharing was not seen as really valuable in and of itself," she said. "We approached photography as kind of like a social medium, as a way to communicate with people."
