Quote of the day: Game developer blues

As next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, approaches, game developer Warren Spector tells CNET News.com that he has mixed feelings about new video game systems like Xbox and PlayStation. They'll be a player's paradise, Spector says, but they might lead to a more Hollywood-like industry dominated by just a few big companies.

"The quality bar is going to be raised," Spector said, in a story published Thursday. "Someone is going to spend $20 million or $30 million or $40 million, and the rest of us who don't have deep pockets like that are going to have to find some way to compete."

Key here is Service Providers

The independant developers in Gaming industry (Multi-Player Interactive) will always have an outlet for their products in the new Model Service Providers offering local based Central Game Server(s)operating over their DSL/Cable Modem or Broadband Wireless (WiFi) Nets.
Unfortunately the quest to gain access and control of the end users IP Address via a Central (Worldwide)Gaming Network will be dominated by the Microsofts of the world and limit the capabilities (Best effort Internet access) of the Gaming. The real Gaming experience will happen and flourish when these servers are placed locally in covering the Metro Area with real latency and jitter free services.
True gamers (especially FPS) are having to compromise and accept mediocre connections in these WOrldWide Central Servers.
