Quark plans to buy Coris

Publishing software maker Quark said today that it plans to buy Coris, a subsidiary of R.R. Donnelley and Sons (DNY).

At the heart of the purchase is Coris Publisher 3.0, a product for publishing and production content management. As part of the deal, Coris Publisher engineers will join Quark.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Coris Publisher was developed to publish information in a variety of media, such as print, CD-ROM, and on the Web, the company said. A gateway has been built to link the tool with Quark's QuarkXPress application.

"Long-term plans include leveraging Quark and Coris technology to produce a best-of-class content management solution for future Quark client-server applications," Susan I. Friedman, Quark vice president of product management, said in a statement.

Six months ago Quark set aside $200 million to either acquire or invest in technology and content that complement existing products, and to move into new markets, according to the Denver, Colorado-based company. Quark's areas of interest continue to be both U.S. and international companies developing client-server, Internet, publishing, and education technologies, the company said. Coris is the first acquisition stemming from this strategy.

R.R. Donnelley and Sons is a maker of technology for managing, reproducing, and distributing print and digital information for the publishing, retailing, merchandising, and information-technology markets.
