I switched from hotmail to gmail, and I'm so glad I did. Hotmail is just a waste of time and it would take a lot of reprogramming to compete with gmail.
When the internet was first becoming popular I consulted with a Library on how to get people email addresses and we came up with Hotmail. It was the first and only choice at the time. But for years MS Hotmail and Yahoo could have been making improvements but they didn't until Google came along. Free pop access and secure login. Not to mention the fast interface for people on dialup.
