Physician tapped for Google philanthropy role

An international public health specialist with wide-ranging experience in technology and business will take the helm of Google's philanthropic arm, the company said Wednesday. Dr. Larry Brilliant, 61, was named executive director of Google.org, which has set aside more than $7 million for investments and grants related to several broad areas, including global poverty, health, energy and the environment.

Brilliant, an award-winning physician and epidemiologist, began his career as a World Health Organization officer and lived for more than a decade in India, where he focused on the fight against smallpox and polio. In the technology realm, he is perhaps best known for co-founding the pioneering online community known as The Well.

Wow....$7 Million...don't risk too much eh?

Great to do, poorly executed opening. My God, the cash and
profits of Google you would think could support a somewhat more
significant endeavor. Same mistake Gates made, too slow out of
the gate and lack of focus for years. He finally got on track, but
why so slow & weak a more...think about it Google.

children of incarcerated parents
by moxiemaydl February 22, 2006 9:38 AM PST
I hope the new foundation will interest itself in the situation of children of prisoners, a group of children which now is larger than 3% of the population, innocent victims, traumatized as they "do time" along with their parent. For young children this is particularly awful, because parents interpret the world for them and connect them with it. More on my webpage at:

I would be glad to be of assistance.
Sincerely,
