No screen?
I see Apple's thinking, but I almost would have preferred a
screen of some sort.

Just missed
Yeah, shuffle mode is great, but I wanted the complete iPod experience (screen, click-wheel, and all) just in a flash memory player rather than a hard-drive based one.

So close, so disappointing

How lame...
How lame. Why Apple neglected to put a screen on the device is a mystery and a big mistake. Who wants to scroll through songs blindly just to find the one they're looking for? Not I. I was really looking forward to getting one, but now I'll wait for the Creative Zen Micro 1GB and enjoy the luxury of a screen...

Luxury costs
"but now I'll wait for the Creative Zen Micro 1GB and enjoy the
luxury of a screen"

Yeah, and it's gonna cost an extra $50 for that luxury.

Just flame.. It's anything but LAME
The shuffle is great in it's simplicity & size. I got the 512mb & can load 33 hours of audio book & still have some room. I don't need to carry ALL my music, I choose a playlist & run with it. kudos to apple.. :)

Not at all Revolutionary
It seems like the fluke of the Ipod is turning Apple into a company that is riding off the coat-tails of its most popular product. I can stomach the Imac because its funcational and Beautiful. I like the Mac Mini because it targets a new audience. And I like the white design of all the apple products (the transparent colors of the old Imacs were tacky). But now with the Ipod Shuffle, Apple thinks they can get their loyalists and other consumers to buy just about anything. If I want an expensive MP3 player that randomly plays my music, I'll get ANY mp3 player and stick it on shuffle. Seriously, it it the design thing, cause we get it. Apple should try and get with the program. Screens on music players are a great idea and all of your other players prove that. You think selling a bjillion of Ipods would have told you that!

No Joy!
One and only one positive out of this whole design...size. That is all that is good about this. Not having a screen and wanting to sell this item at around $150! I pity the gullible for spending that kind of money on something that will outlive its trendiness in nothing flat. Apple..lets see what your 1st quarter sales will reveal.

Oooh, can't imagine all the gadgets you'll attempt to try and sell to complement this sub standard design. Imagine someone buying a carrying case for this thing that will come to at least a fourth of the cost of the iPod Shuffle. Folks, dont waste your money. I wont.

Kudos for the Mac Mini.

Brilliantly daring!
Small, looks great, it opens up the club of iPod trendy owners by
being more afordable. Research must obviously prove it fits a
market segment behavior too.
As proven before (e.g. droping floppy reader from the iMac),
Apple doe not hesitate to rock our world.
Brilliantly daring, I say. Let's see if the market does see it the
same way...

Sweet...
Why clutter it up with a screen? Jobs has it right: You want to set up playlists on the go, use your iPod. This puppy is perfect in minimalist design, clean execution, great for the gym, a quick run, not heavy, the list goes on. What this device is meant for, it does cleanly and clearly. Now, where are the colors? Transparent would be nice...

Here's to the crazy ones...
The doubters always doubt. And yet, if Apple listened to those who are complaining now, they wouldn't have built half the amazing stuff they had. If the design is bad, the market will show it...

About the built-in, 12-hour battery...
The iPod Shuffle is small, light, and pretty, and Apple was right to omit the screen. The device will benefit from the iPod brand name, but it's not compelling.

In the flash market, the iPod Shuffle is limited by its battery. After just 12 hours you'll have to charge the device. The battery is built-in, so you won't be able to run to the corner store for a new one.* And when the battery reaches the end of its useful life, replacement won't be cheap.

People who want a standard battery and good battery life should consider Sony's NW-E99, which gives 50 hours of play from a single AAA battery. The device measures 2.25 x 1.50 x 0.59 inches, weighs about 2 ounces, has a screen (for those who like that), and now plays MP3 files directly (no more conversion to ATRAC3). Street price for this 1 GB model is $200.

Interestingly, the iPod Shuffle isn't the smallest and lightest MP3 player on the market.

People who want something even smaller should consider BenQ's Joybee 102, which measures 1.6 x 1.6 x 0.3 inches and weighs 0.35 ounces. At this size I can forgive the built-in 8-hour battery and the small 256 MB capacity. Street price is about $160.

IPOD SHUFFLE
- 3.3 x 0.98 x 0.33 inches
- 1.07 cubic inches [calculated volume]
- 0.78 ounces
- built-in rechargeable battery
- 12-hour battery life
- 1 GB model = $150

SONY NW-E55/75/95
- 2.25 x 1.50 x 0.59 inches
- 1.99 cubic inches [calculated volume]
- 2 ounces
- standard AAA battery
- 50-hour battery life (for 128 kbps MP3 files, specifically)
- 1 GB model = $200

BENQ JOYBEE 102R
- 1.6 x 1.6 x 0.30 inches
- 0.90 cubic inches [calculated volume]
- 0.35 ounces
- built-in rechargeable battery
- 8-hour battery life
- 256 MB model = $160

Specifications are from vendor Web pages or manuals, except volumes (in cubic inches), which I calculated from the dimensions. Prices are from various online retailers.

* I realize that an external battery case is available for the iPod Shuffle. The case accepts two AAA batteries, adding weight and bulk for just 20 hours' more play time.

ummm, battery 12 hour life a problem? NOT
Just plug it in. I bet if you try one u'll get addicted just like the
regular iPod. Oh, I do enjoy your objective comparisons, but
on this one you seem to have missed the popularity if iTunes
and the fact that plugging this in, works the same as any other
iPod. If you don't know what I'm talking about, then you check
it out. The popularity of the iPod is not just style, its the perfect
blend of form and function.

the battery lasts longer
even though Apple's estimated battery life is 12 hours, real world tests have shown that it lasts closer to 20 hours

Same Old Story
All those people complaining sounds like the same old story.
The same old Mac's suck story... yet you see company after
company copying whatever Apple does. What Apple's problem
really is is implementing their ideas... ie look at the Newton.

I cannot remember when an Apple product wasn't ridiculed... its
part of the process... make a product, great or not, and watch
the PC world follow.

This iPod shuffle... is it brilliant, probably not, but again they
take a chance on design and functionality... and if popular....
companies will start cloning.

Without Screen......
How can I know what song I am listening right now? Shuffling is a good idea, and $99 is sweet, but......not likely to buy one :(

Ok..
Ok you picked out the playlist, downloaded it into the Ipod Mini and you cant recognize the song from hearing it?

I dont think your enough of an audiophile to not regret spending $99 on a portable music player so you probably should stay away.
