No screen?

I see Apple's thinking, but I almost would have preferred a
screen of some sort.

Yeah, shuffle mode is great, but I wanted the complete iPod experience (screen, click-wheel, and all) just in a flash memory player rather than a hard-drive based one.

So close, so disappointing

How lame...
by January 11, 2005 12:58 PM PST
How lame. Why Apple neglected to put a screen on the device is a mystery and a big mistake. Who wants to scroll through songs blindly just to find the one they're looking for? Not I. I was really looking forward to getting one, but now I'll wait for the Creative Zen Micro 1GB and enjoy the luxury of a screen...

Not at all Revolutionary
by Tom Kling January 11, 2005 1:37 PM PST
It seems like the fluke of the Ipod is turning Apple into a company that is riding off the coat-tails of its most popular product. I can stomach the Imac because its funcational and Beautiful. I like the Mac Mini because it targets a new audience. And I like the white design of all the apple products (the transparent colors of the old Imacs were tacky). But now with the Ipod Shuffle, Apple thinks they can get their loyalists and other consumers to buy just about anything. If I want an expensive MP3 player that randomly plays my music, I'll get ANY mp3 player and stick it on shuffle. Seriously, it it the design thing, cause we get it. Apple should try and get with the program. Screens on music players are a great idea and all of your other players prove that. You think selling a bjillion of Ipods would have told you that!

No Joy!
by January 11, 2005 1:58 PM PST
One and only one positive out of this whole design...size. That is all that is good about this. Not having a screen and wanting to sell this item at around $150! I pity the gullible for spending that kind of money on something that will outlive its trendiness in nothing flat. Apple..lets see what your 1st quarter sales will reveal.

Oooh, can't imagine all the gadgets you'll attempt to try and sell to complement this sub standard design. Imagine someone buying a carrying case for this thing that will come to at least a fourth of the cost of the iPod Shuffle. Folks, don?t waste your money. I won?t.

Kudos for the Mac Mini.

Brilliantly daring!

Small, looks great, it opens up the club of iPod trendy owners by
being more afordable. Research must obviously prove it fits a
market segment behavior too.
As proven before (e.g. droping floppy reader from the iMac),
Apple doe not hesitate to rock our world.
Brilliantly daring, I say. Let's see if the market does see it the
same way...

Why clutter it up with a screen? Jobs has it right: You want to set up playlists on the go, use your iPod. This puppy is perfect in minimalist design, clean execution, great for the gym, a quick run, not heavy, the list goes on. What this device is meant for, it does cleanly and clearly. Now, where are the colors? Transparent would be nice...

Here's to the crazy ones...

The doubters always doubt. And yet, if Apple listened to those who are complaining now, they wouldn't have built half the amazing stuff they had. If the design is bad, the market will show it...
