Actual Powerful Fanless Mini PCs
No offence to the VIA cpus but they really aren't that powerful and they definately lack in performance. The only decent thing about ITX stuff is that it is super cheap.

If you really want more perfomance and still want a small mini computer system then you should look into something like this:
<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.littlepc.com/products_fanless_p4.htm" target="_newWindow">http://www.littlepc.com/products_fanless_p4.htm</a>

In those systems you can even buy solid state flash hard drives as well for a true fanless noise free system.

What about Apple?
Apple has been in the business of quiet computing for a long time now, and they're really good at it. How come they aren't mentioned?

Why not Apple?
I teach in a mixed computing environment: the school network
is PC and the state's technology initiative went with Apple in the
world's largest experiment in technology based education and
purchased iBooks for all students in grades 7 and 8. I bought an
iBook G4 to make the switch from PCs having started with TRS
-80s a long time ago. But when a staff team wanted a machine
to manage assessment data processing, they bought a Dell D
-505. I love Apple's innovation. Others love PC familiarity.
Familiarity breeds. In the case of computing, the tail does not
wag the dog.

Yeah, Apple
The G4 Cube had a marvelous, fanless design, much like a
chimney. The G5 also has a cooling system much more refined
than those shown in the pictures (not to mention that it's not
external). Those designs are cool, but it is odd to leave Apple
out. CNET has always tended to pitch negative stories about
Apple, despite generally balanced reporting.

Because
Much of CNETs income is through Microsoft advertising.

They cant very well bite the hand that feeds them.

But in an effort to keep from seeming biased and being placed in tough situations they have opted to just ignore Apple rather than actively being negative toward them.

So they can at least be commended for the effort.

Don't bring Apple into this
Most Apple users are extremely protective of everything named Apple, and a bit uninformed.
Many Apple users are autmatically connecting an article like this one to MS. That shows on a problem by the reader of the article.
This article is talking about PC, not Microsoft. A PC can be used with Unix systems, Linux system, and Microsoft systems.
The above systems, contrary to Apple systems, are computers that can be assembled with hardware of your choice and can therefore get noisier than a Mac if buying cheap stuff or more quiet than a Mac if buying more expensive cooling, case, and other hardware. The nice thing is that you can get such solutions as the ones shown in the article or an extreme like liquid nitrogen cooling solutions (-192 degrees celcius). You can't get that on a Mac. At least that I know of but I may be wrong (should be some out there).
A Mac is always a complete solution. You can't build your own Mac computer by going out and choosing which brand and pricing of mobo, mems, other cards, etc you would prefer. This is a major difference. Choice. Something breaks in a Mac and you are pretty much screwed or ruined.

I've been using Mac's and PC's since 1980. Still have my Apple II at home, with DOS floppy OS though. I use and have used all Mac OS'es and Windows OS'es + FreeBSD, Slackware, and Solaris 10. They are all great for respective purposes. The only one I can't afford now though is a Mac OSX machine, which I wish I could.

cannot agree more with M C
If you assemble your own computer, than you probably can identify with this article. It does not make you a genius if you do, because a monkey could be taught to assemble a PC these days. Notice that the original article did not mention a particular computer vendor, but only companies that sell those parts, which have had an impact on cooling and created a need for noisy fans. Apple has produced some really good hardware, but practically any computer makes quiet computers. It is mostly ony an issue when you assemble it yourself. I did not research heatsink fans on a computer a few years ago and ended with something that sounded like an air conditioner.

The Power Mac G5 is liquid cooled
Building your own computer is silly... Do you build your own car,
house, boat, or any other major household appliance? If you are
willing to sacrifice reliability then building your own is the way to
go. The component part computer is much like trying to make a
honda work with a toyota transmission.. in the end it just means
substandard operation and reliability. But if thats what your
into... Have at it!

Building Your Own Computer !
Why Is building Your own Computer silly. Actually You are a silly You know what because You have no clue about where 2 would start or what to buy. I Recently Built P4 PC with 1041 FSB with 2 Gb of Kingston DDR 3200 = 512. X 2 = 80.00 .I paid 150.00 for an NEW OEM Intel 3.0 P4 800 fsb 1MB L2 Cache Spec code SL6Z9 and installed it in an Asus P5P800 SE = 85.00 Mo/Bo. I have over clocked it to 4,150 Mhz stable for 7 days straight. At such high speeds I must use 5 80MM fans but still run 40 degrees Celsius .wish is great compared to my old 478 P$ I also have two Seagate 7200.7 barracuda S3T120026AS Serial ATA Hard Drives = 95.00 . I also added a 600 watt blue anodized powork power supply = 33.00 A silver ATX Clear side view window case.40.00 . And 2 Nec ND-6500A DVD±R DL. 120.00. I also have a GeForce 7800 GTX 512. = 225.00 .Also Installed Windows Xp professional X64. This computer is better than any computer Dell Could put together. The computer industry is too much like the auto industry, PROPRIETARY. I like being able to build a computer as I want it and not pay out the azz for it from Dell,Hp,Sony and all of the other proprietary computer corporations.Add up what I have in my rig and get a better deal from Dell. Go ahead and add 250.00 for a 3.0 Dual Core to while You have Your calculator out!!! I have owned Dells and other computers and they are garbage. I will never buy from them again and have built many computers for people for this same reason. Live and learn !

I also have two Seagate 7200.7 barracuda S3T120026AS Serial ATA Hard Drives = 95.00 .
