Say hello to dual cores

As expected, PC makers rolled out their first dual-core processor desktops on Monday. Dell's fifth-generation Dimension XPS, which starts at about $2,900 without a monitor, was among the first PCs to be offered with a dual core, Intel's Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840.

A Dell for $2900?
Common wisdom is that Macs are expensive, but the low end
dual Processor Powermac is $1999. Apple high end Powermac is
$2999. Dell's low end dual core CPU starts at $2900. So tell me
again how Macs are expensive?

XPS
I'm not hundred percent sure about this, but I think that the Dell XPS is actually the highest-end model geared towards gamers. And the price is comparable with similar offerings from alienware.

A lower end system using this processor would probably cost around $1200..

Swing... and he misses
This is the ultra high-end gaming Dell Desktop, and it has the first X86 dual core processors in it. Dont expect them to come cheap, but I am willing to bet they are much more handy for gaming than their Mac price-equivelent.

Dual Processor is not the same as dual core
In fact dual processor PC's have been around since the Pentium Pro. A dual Xeon PC - the HP Workstation xw6200 costs $1,300.

So there's your answer. I'm glad to be of assistance.

This is new?
Apple has been deploying dual processors technology for years on
their professional PowerMac lineup. Currently Dual G5 with liquid
cooling system is just amazing. No wonder you don't see Dell very7
often in movie, TV studios or any multimedia post production
facilities.

Another thing, sorry to say, when is Longhorn going to be
released? Apple's true 64 bit operating system Tiger was just out of
the cage. Unix based, rocket solid!

Not the same
Dual core processors are completely different than dual processor systems.

Yes, it is
It's dual processor PC's that are OLD. I worked on a dual Pentium Pro workstation in the mid 1990's. What did the revolutionary mac have at that time? Sorry there's no comparison.

It's about time
3.2 Ghz X 2
2 X 1Mb L2 Cache
800 FSb

Good entry point. From now on all desktops should be required to have dual processors. NT has always performed best with 2 or more processors.

Need to make 1Gb minimum memory for this to be completely effective. 2Gb is best minimum.

Intel should have stuck to it's dual core plan a few years ago when t first came up. I have used many workstations with dual 800s and found them to perform as well as new 3Ghz desktops. The catch was that the manufacturers always charged a premium to put two on a motherboard. Buying old servers has been the only way around this price gouging.

Now Intel and AMD are going to force the issue.
