Nah, Remember NTP only licensed the technology
So Palm, among dozens of other providers, could license the technology from NTP and effectively compete with RIM. The makers of the Blackberry were stupid to say the least. They should have settled four years ago for a cool billion dollars. Not only did they not win many concessions regarding the case, they exposed RIM's competition (i.e. viable alternatives) to the public. And now that Palm/Microsoft/Verizon have entered the scene with the Treo 700w, I wouldn't be investing in RIM anytime soon.

Not Quite accurate, the gorilla is in the room now.
Nobody has corellated the release of all of the new MS 5.0 Mobile devices with this settlement. Blackberry now is a tougher pill to swallow for IT and accountants as the Microsoft Exchange capable units are a significant cost savings compared to the Blackberry server product. Palm, Nokia, and all of the other MS capable devices will gather far more market share than Blackberry primarly because they will work with Exhange systems out of the box- no additional server or server products required.

Palm was already headed for a fall
This settlement is great news. I used to love my PalmPilot but after owning a Palm 300 and 650 I am looking forward to abandoning them. The 650 is such a piece of junk, I have had nothing but problem after problem with my Palm phones.

RIM on the otherhand seems to kick ass when it comes to customer satisfaction. There's a reason why people call it a "Crackberry". RIM owners rave about their little devices and even former Palm owners I know rave about it.

If I make the switch from Palm to RIM, It's going to require a senior level VPs approval to get my Blackberry working with my company's email, but it's worth dealing with it. Mind you if it were an MS product, my IT department would probably never allow it.
