Openwave names new CEO

Cell phone software maker Openwave Systems on Thursday named David Peterschmidt as its new president and chief executive officer. Peterschmidt replaces Don Listwin, who will continue to be vice chairman and serve as a consultant to Peterschmidt until the end of the year. Peterschmidt most recently was CEO of Securify, a Cupertino, Calif.-based security software company. Before that, he served as chairman and chief executive of Inktomi, which was acquired by Yahoo for $225 million in 2003.

Openwave, which makes a Web browser for Internet-enabled phones, bought U.K.-based rival Magic4 in May. The acquisition of Magic4, which specializes in enhanced wireless messaging services such as video mail, is expected to help Openwave enter the messaging software arena.
