Novell preps Web publishing tools

One day after launching its next-generation email application GroupWise 5, Novell (NOVL) today said it is building complementary Web publishing software meant to simplify the job of Web site administrators.

Code-named the Jefferson Project, the software is designed for companies seeking a technically-accessible process for creating and updating documents and hypertext links on Web sites, the company said. The application is scheduled for release in early 1997 and will be integrated into other GroupWise applications, Novell added.

The new software will allow corporate Web site administrators "to spend more time implementing mission-critical intranet applications and less time translating documents into HTML or writing CGI scripts," according to Novell.

The project will work in concert with the GroupWise document management library. Changes made in document content or access privileges will automatically be reflected on the Web site, eliminating the need to update text and hypertext links.

Information Builders' FOCUS Six reporting application will also be integrated into GroupWise 5. The reporting tool allows users to seek out specific details inside email messages, documents, appointment calendars, and other online company information.

The tool will also sort email and allow users to view the information in new ways, such as pie charts displaying percentages and category summaries, for example. The Information Builders' application is meant for managers interested in evaluating workgroup performance and identifying potential problems, according to the company.
