Nortel wins China telecom deal

Nortel Networks said on Wednesday that it has been named the exclusive supplier of next-generation telecommunications equipment to China's Shandong Province. Nortel will sell equipment that can support broadband, voice, data and multimedia services. The equipment will initially be used in the cities of Qingdao, Jinan and Tai'an.

The equipment Nortel will sell to Shandong Netcom includes its Networks Multimedia Communication Server 5200, which supports Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), a technology used for voice calls over the Internet. Shandong Netcom will also use Nortel's Networks Succession Communication Server 2000, which manages phone calls.
