Nokia ships first 1X Phone

Leap Wireless has begun selling the first-ever phones from Nokia that can work on telephone networks based on the new generation of Qualcomm's CDMA (code division multiple access). The phones can operate on telephone networks using the CDMA2001xrtt standard. These telephone networks are supposed to have more capacity for cell phone calls and support Internet browsing at speeds rivaling a landline dial-up modem.

A Leap Wireless spokeswoman said the phone, the Nokia 6370, will cost $99 and is available in only Denver and Phoenix, two of Leap's 40 markets. The company plans to sell the phone in other markets, but has yet to name them.
