News Corp. woos Oracle

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. online publishing venture may recover from its jilting by MCI Telecommunications by hooking up with database vendor Oracle, according to a Bloomberg News report.

News Corp. started off as a joint venture with MCI and Murdoch investing $50 million each. But after News Corp. delayed the launch of its first Web publication, iGuide, MCI last month cut back its financial commitment to 15 percent of the company.

Now industry speculation has it that Oracle will move in to take its place, although neither company will confirm the rumors.

"We're in talks with Oracle and other partners, and that's all we're saying," a spokesperson for News Corp. told CNET.

News Corp. did launch iGuide last month, but as a free publication instead of a subscription-only site as originally planned. MCI, meanwhile, has struck a deal with Microsoft to market its Microsoft Network content through MCI's coming dial-up Internet access service.
