New worm has Net seeing "Red"

The Code Red worm slips through a security hole in Microsoft's server software--relied on by as many as 6 million Web servers--and goes on a rampage, including an attempted barrage of the White House.

The attack on Whitehouse.gov gives system administrators some breathing room to fix infected machines. Newer, more effective variants may be on the horizon, however.
