New or rebranded iPaqs on the way?

A document outlining a series of new unannounced iPaq mobile handhelds from Hewlett-Packard was discovered on the company's Web site on Thursday.

The HP iPaq hw6910 and hw6915 were listed in a document (click here for PDF) that appeared to be a letter from HP confirming that its forthcoming models conformed to wireless regulations in the European Union. The letter was spotted by Mobility Today, and could still be found on HP's Web site Thursday afternoon by searching for one of the new models.

An HP spokesman declined to comment on the unannounced products.

Rumors have circulated on gadget and smart phone blogs for weeks that HP had changed the name of the previously leaked iPaq hw6700 series to the hw6900 series. Last year, a presentation outlining the hw6700 series iPaqs briefly appeared on HP's U.K. Web site, but those models were never officially announced. The hw6700 series handhelds were supposed to be an extension to HP's growing lineup of devices that blur the distinctions between a mobile phone and a personal digital assistant.

Very few specifications about the new hw6900 models were available on the document. The hw6700 series was to run on a new version of Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system that contained support for "push e-mail," a system of delivering corporate e-mail behind a firewall to a mobile device, like Research In Motion's BlackBerry. Engadget reported that the hw6900 series would feature that operating system, but the document did not mention an operating system. The only specification confirmed by the document was a camera: The hw6910 comes with a camera, while the hw6915 does not.

It was also unclear when the devices would arrive in the U.S. HP launched the current hw6500 series iPaqs in Europe before they made their debut in the U.S.
