A new version of Skype Net phone software is now widely available. The latest version lets users import contacts from Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Messenger and Opera and other PC desktop applications.
The Luxembourg-based upstart has so far signed up 29 million registered users for its free Net phone calling software--a unique version of voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP--making it one of the fastest-growing services on the Net. Now it's aiming to milk profits from its swelling ranks of freeloaders with paid services that promise to make its Net-only product significantly more useful to consumers--and potentially a more lethal competitor to traditional phone providers.
New Skype contacts desktop applications...... Skype just did it again...
It amazes me how these young guys are thinking and are so far ahead of the rest of the pack. The new and latest feature Skype has ntroduced "being able to use the address book" in their own application seems to me as no big deal, but obviously it was since someone wrote about it. However the 29 million users Skype claims are using their system I think is really what everyone should focus on. In America you hardly never find a word written about Skype in the media, but almost daily we have to read about these old telephone carriers such as SBC, AT&T, Verizon, not to forget Vonage that I personally receive at least three or four SPAM emails from daily. IT seems that none of these guys are getting it and these very same companies are the ones the media and PRESS here in the US are supporting. SKYPE said 29 MILLION, AT&T said 53,000 and VONAGE said 500,000 and looking at these numbers the US PRESS decided to keep writing about companies that just cant get these numbers to work. OK, so now let's take this whole thing to the next level. Why is Skype so successful... it's gotta be the question? FREE, I think this is the secrets and to prove why this word FREE is what people wants. Been using Skype in the US for keeping in touch with my Girlfriend
For over two years now we have been saving large amounts of cash using Skype over any of the other VoIP services. Sure there are other products but this one worked so smoothly even she could use it..and that is some feat!! hehehehe...anyway, I also use the SkypeOUT feature and for about 1.7¢/minute I can call out to anyone in the US...so I buy another 10-euros (about $13 right now) every few months...the call quality is outstanding and have never had a single hiccup with the SkypeOUT or regular Skype that was not related to something on my system of hers.
Since the SkypeOUT calls are PC-Landline Phone there has never been a problem. I even call my Grandmother across town just to give her the thrill of using the internet even if it is in a passive manner.
I just today saw the new SkypeIN product and for 30-euros (about $US right now) I got a years unlimited incoming calls...so, for about $39/year plus about say $50 more I get all the phone communications I want...$89 and that is it.
But, here is the final kicker...the town I live in will be it's own WiFi ISP in under two weeks now...2-3MB for $20/month...soooo, I can have what amounts to a cell phone using the Skype service anywhere in town. I can service clients sites while sitting in the Park and not tethered to Starbucks or my home...all of this will $89 for Skype and $240 for the ISP...so for $329/year I am doing business online and allowing my clients and friends to contact me whenever they want and whenever I want...I can get out and have a nice walk for coffee then sit, rest answer emails pack up and walk to the park or other place in town...and still be in communication with the world...
Sure the towns decision to become a municipal ISP makes it all possible, but Skype itself has been developed just for the purpose for which I will be using it...
We are simply thrilled is all I can say...and I will do my best to get out local paper to do an article on how this small company can be a corner stone in promoting the towns wireless ISP...who needs a cell phone in town now? And el cheapo for when traveling out of town emergencies but no longer will we need to send that extra $500-$1000/year on a cell phone...
Of course there is still the teeny tiny matter of local access numbers...d'oh!! but hey one thing at a time...clients can use the number I got today until a local number can be had...
