New Net domains near approval

The agency in charge of administering Internet addresses has entered final negotiations for implementing two new top-level domains, .travel and .post.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Wednesday said it will begin technical and commercial negotiations to create and run the two new domains, a process that could take months. ICANN is considering creating 10 top-level domains (TLDs) to augment the nearly 250 current TLDs already in use, from the famous .com TLD to scores of lesser-known country TLDs such as .uk. In addition to .travel and .post, proposals for new TLDs include .xxx, .jobs, .asia and .eu. The status of the eight other applicants is still pending, the group said in a statement.

More names mix people up

It's nice to have choices but ultimately, I think that the Internet becomes more confusing as we add new Tlds. I think our system of Generic top level domains and the country-codes should suffice for a long time.

It seems to me that we are being short sighted and English-language centric to add a .travel and a .post as they are only for the US and English speaking market.

How do you say "professional" (.pro) in other languages; or "travel"... or "post"?

These are just thoughts to consider. The other angle is that you just open up the whole first-level space to all comers.???

The world should speak English

Well, eventually the entire world will be run by the world new order and we can't do that until everyone speaks one language. And since English is the most common first and second language, the world will eventually will come to speak English. You can blame the English past coloziation and the current American entertainment. The Internet is just an extension of that American entertainment.

And these will be as successful as: .aero, .museum

Let's face it.

99% of the English-speaking sees www.domainname.??? and immediately types .com.

I tell my non-profit clients to get www.domainname.ORG because it conveys "non profit". I also tell them to get (if they can) wwww.domainname.COM and use it as a redirect for those prospects who can type .ORG.

ANY OTHER TLDs are a waste of money. I love that ICANN created .aero for "aerospace" companies. As if the 1000 aerospace companies on the entire planet needed their own domain.

Now, .radio might make sense as there are thousands of radio stations worldwide and it would give them some branding. But, no, we get .travel.

OK, I am being unfair as .eu makes sense.
