National sex offender list goes online

The Department of Justice has launched an online public registry that allows people to track sex offenders across the nation. The database, which debuted Wednesday, includes the names, addresses and photos of convicted offenders.

The site links the registries of 22 different states. The remaining states are expected to join by year's end, for a total of more than 500,000 sex offenders listed, according to the Justice Department.

It's too bad ...

... the web site sucks. Poor navigation and it uses frames, so the
DOJ has competely bypassed anyone with special needs that wants
to use the site.

Such a shameful waste of taxpayer money. It could have been done
a LOT better.

Would be to actually rehabilitate the sex offenders. This process of tracking released sex offenders is saying - the system doesn't work. the punishment/rehabilitation process doesn't work.

Putting in things like "3 strikes" says the system doesn't work. We keep locking up more & more people - 0.7% of the population, so far - if we lock up more people, shouldn't we have the lowest crime rate in the world ?

I don't simply advocate letting people out. But find a system that works. Should we even have custodial sentences for non-violent crime or small property theft/damage ? What's wrong with community service & other such sentences ?
