NIC Co. releases updated OS

New Internet Computer Co., the Internet-appliance maker backed by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, said Wednesday it has started shipping an updated operating system for its $200 Web-browsing terminal. Version 2.0 of the OS, which is available free to existing owners of the New Internet Computer (NIC), adds an improved MP3 player, support for Macromedia Flash 5.0 and RealPlayer 8.0, and easier set-up for those with a network or DSL connection. The new software also adds quick links to partners such as Amazon.com.

"Version 2.0 of our product is a major upgrade, and I'm incredibly proud of it," NIC Co. CEO Gina Smith said in a statement. "NIC now has the only Internet computer priced at under $200 that's capable of running with the latest RealPlayer and Macromedia Flash players. It's also the only one that works with the widest variety of broadband and dial-up ISP connections."
