NBC tries broadband for second-run sports

NBC has launched a co-branded broadband video site aimed at live coverage not easily obtained on television for sports such as mountain biking, surfing and European basketball.

The NBC Sports site, co-branded with online broadcaster MediaZone, pulls live coverage, content and on-demand access from both companies.

The site is the just the latest effort to wed sports with online content delivery.

NBC and MediaZone recently partnered for the Wimbledon tennis championships with "Wimbledon Live" online, which streamed more than 325 matches during the tournament.

After the Wimbledon partnership, the companies decided to launch the co-branded site.

Prices for specific games, tournaments and sports vary. The recent FIBA world basketball championships cost $5.99 for an all-access pass, or $2.99 per game.

The Xtreme Sports Channel charges $99.99 for a one-year pass, or $9.99 per month.

The rugby channel charges $129.99 for an annual pass. Or, for example, the 70 rugby matches for the New Zealand Cup cost $39.99.

The fishing channel costs $39.99 for a one-year pass, and the motocross channel charges $29.99 for an annual pass, or $7.99 to $14.99 per event.
