N.Y. public library offers free films online
The New York Public Library has added video to its eCollection, an online catalog of free downloadable content. The new section includes movies, foreign films, documentaries, children's programs, IMAX features and filmed live stage performances such as Katherine Hepburn performing in "The Glass Menagerie." The service is available to those with a New York Public Library borrower's card. The eCollection already offers books, audio books and music free for download.
Over the last two years, the New York Public Library has been expanding its reach into the digital world. In December 2004 it partnered with Google to bring full texts of public domain books to the Web. In 2005 it launched HomeworkNYC, which offers 24-hour homework support to New York City schoolchildren. And in March 2005 it launched an online gallery of more than 450,000 images from its archives, allowing visitors to download free low-resolution images, or order them in high-resolution.
