Broadband Map

Roll over a state to view its broadband projects and legislation in this box.

This interactive map only includes fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) or large wireless networks deployed by a city or municipality. It does not include municipally owned Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) cable networks. It focuses on citywide projects rather than small wireless hot spots installed in public places, such as cafes or airports.

If you know of a city or municipality that has installed either an FTTP network or a citywide Wi-Fi network, please let us know. We will be updating the interactive map as more information is gathered or as more communities begin these projects.

The sources for the information in the map include the Baller Herbst Law Group, Tropos Networks, Muniwireless.com and Atlantic Engineering Group.

For more information regarding current or pending communications legislation please check out these Web sites: Baller Herbst, barriers to entry; American Public Power Association; Baller Herbst, proposed state barriers (PDF file).

You forgot Loma Linda, CA
The map says that there are no functioning Muni-FttH/P projects in California. This is in fact incorrect. Loma Linda, CA is in the process of building a Municipal FttH/P network, with parts of the community already recieving service. You can read about it here: <a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.lomalinda-ca.gov/llccp_index.htm" target="_newWindow">http://www.lomalinda-ca.gov/llccp_index.htm</a>

Appreciate the notice. Loma Linda was added. This map is not a static, frozen resource -- we're updating as we learn more and confirm the tips and information our readers share with us. Sorry to miss things first time around, but thanks for reading.

Map the GOP controlled states
It would be interesting to map the states with laws limiting
municipal communication networks and the control of the
legislature and executive branches at the time the laws were
enacted. I'll bet it shows how pro-business and anti-american
(citizens anyway) the GOP has become.

re: Map the GOP controlled states
I'm a liberal Demo but this would be bad for so many people. I work for verizon dsl dept and it's huge. gov controller dsl would put alot of people out of work. if the gov paid verizon that would be a different story but my (as well as many others) depend on that. And a side note... our fiber stuff is going to be huge and very reasonably priced. nothing like cable's $50 a month, we're talking about 5mbps at dsl prices.

I'm not so sure about that
Hover over the state of Connecticut and you'll see a whole lot of nothing.

We aren't exactly a red state.

There is no municipal wireless project in Seattle. In fact, the city government is oppsed to municipal wireless projects on the grounds that it would compate against Comcast. There are many private network hotspots, but no municipal effort and no support for one, at this time.

Many more projects in Vermont
Vermont has many broadband initiatives, mostly driven by citizen committees in Vermont's smaller rural towns. Projects are supported by the Vermont Council on Rural Development's Vermont Rural Broadband Project. See "Community Broadband Projects" as www.VermontRuralBroadband.org.

The legislation limited networks in WA state is very limited. First, it applies only to public utility districts (read rural electric co-ops). Second, it requires that the books segregate costs for the telecom networ, but doesn't explicitly prohibit sudsidization. Most PUDs have interpreted the legislation to limit retail ISPs. So they provide wholesale broadband only. That's it. Not too bad, as these things go.

I have tried viewing this map using Safari, Camino, Internet Explorer, and Mozilla. When I punch on one of the states, it just gives me "javascript: void(0)" and doesn't do anything. Yes, I have Java and Javascript turned on, I have no popup blocker, etc.

Cedar Falls, IA missing
Cedar Falls, IA ran municipal fiber to the house a decade ago and has been providing remote meter reading, cable, and data services for at least that long.

Keep the tips coming in
Thanks for all of your responses, especially those letting us at CNET News.com know about other municipal wireless or fiber projects. We're working on updating the map with these as soon as we can.

Please keep sending us information about city initiatives to pipe broadband to the home via these Talkback postings. We appreciate your help in making this map as comprehensive as possible.

Utah Update/Clarification
Under Municipal Wireless you should get rid of all of those cities they should actually be included in the municipal fiber projects (Utopia Project).

Utopia Project Includes 16 cities:
Lindon, Orem, Payson, Perry, Brigham City, Tremonton, Washington, Vineyard, Riverton, Cedar City, Murray, Midvale, West Valley City, Centerville, Cedar Hills, &#38; Layton

(for reference see utopianet.org)

The Provo Project is called iProvo and it is fiber

Thanks

Oakland County, MI
Oakland County, Michigan has a pretty aggresively scheduled program to cover the whole county with wireless broadband. They plan to pilot in Fall of '05 and go county-wide in Winter '06.

<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.co.oakland.mi.us/wireless/" target="_newWindow">http://www.co.oakland.mi.us/wireless/</a>

At 910 square miles and a population 1.2 million I understand it's one of the largest government broadband wireless programs around.

Illinois legislation
Your map indicates that there is no language pending in Illinois to limit municipal broadband when, in fact, Republican gubernatorial candidate state Senator Steve Rauschenberger has introduced preemptive language (SB 499):

<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/94/SB/PDF/09400SB0499sam001.pdf" target="_newWindow">http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/94/SB/PDF/09400SB0499sam001.pdf</a>

Good think we have a democratically controlled state legislature. Otherwise Rauschenberger's bill might have moved...

More statistics please
This is a great set of articles and an excellent map. Thanks for publishing them.

It would be helpful if the map also had things like population size, take rates, and a point of contact for the running projects. Also, is there a way to enhance the interactivity of the map such that citizens of towns not being served can show their level of interest, even if none, in these municipal projects? That way somebody looking to build these new and modern networks may be able to better find potential locations.

Again, thanks so much for this great information.
