This interactive map only includes fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) or large wireless networks deployed by a city or municipality. It does not include municipally owned Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) cable networks. It focuses on citywide projects rather than small wireless hot spots installed in public places, such as cafes or airports.

If you know of a city or municipality that has installed either an FTTP network or a citywide Wi-Fi network, please let us know. We will be updating the interactive map as more information is gathered or as more communities begin these projects.

The sources for the information in the map include the Baller Herbst Law Group, Tropos Networks, Muniwireless.com and Atlantic Engineering Group.

You forgot Loma Linda, CA
The map says that there are no functioning Muni-FttH/P projects in California. This is in fact incorrect. Loma Linda, CA is in the process of building a Municipal FttH/P network, with parts of the community already recieving service. Map the GOP controlled states
It would be interesting to map the states with laws limiting
municipal communication networks and the control of the
legislature and executive branches at the time the laws were
enacted. I'll bet it shows how pro-business and anti-american
(citizens anyway) the GOP has become.

I'm a liberal Demo but this would be bad for so many people. I work for verizon dsl dept and it's huge. gov controller dsl would put alot of people out of work. if the gov paid verizon that would be a different story but my (as well as many others) depend on that. And a side note... our fiber stuff is going to be huge and very reasonably priced. nothing like cable's $50 a month, we're talking about 5mbps at dsl prices.

There is no municipal wireless project in Seattle. In fact, the city government is oppsed to municipal wireless projects on the grounds that it would compate against Comcast. There are many private network hotspots, but no municipal effort and no support for one, at this time.

Many more projects in Vermont
Vermont has many broadband initiatives, mostly driven by citizen committees in Vermont's smaller rural towns. Projects are supported by the Vermont Council on Rural Development's Vermont Rural Broadband Project. See "Community Broadband Projects" as www.VermontRuralBroadband.org.

Second, it requires that the books segregate costs for the telecom networ, but doesn't explicitly prohibit sudsidization. Most PUDs have interpreted the legislation to limit retail ISPs. So they provide wholesale broadband only. That's it. Not too bad, as these things go.

Utah Update/Clarification
Under Municipal Wireless you should get rid of all of those cities they should actually be included in the municipal fiber projects (Utopia Project).

Utopia Project Includes 16 cities:
Lindon, Orem, Payson, Perry, Brigham City, Tremonton, Washington, Vineyard, Riverton, Cedar City, Murray, Midvale, West Valley City, Centerville, Cedar Hills, &#38; Layton

The Provo Project is called iProvo and it is fiber

Oakland County, Michigan has a pretty aggresively scheduled program to cover the whole county with wireless broadband. They plan to pilot in Fall of '05 and go county-wide in Winter '06.

At 910 square miles and a population 1.2 million I understand it's one of the largest government broadband wireless programs around.

Utah's Utopia: My neighbor had fiber hooked up today
My neighbor had fiber hooked up today. I haven't heard any real advertising yet, but while the infrastucture isn't in place in all 11 cities yet, it is up and running in Orem.

More statistics please
This is a great set of articles and an excellent map. Thanks for publishing them.

It would be helpful if the map also had things like population size, take rates, and a point of contact for the running projects. Also, is there a way to enhance the interactivity of the map such that citizens of towns not being served can show their level of interest, even if none, in these municipal projects? That way somebody looking to build these new and modern networks may be able to better find potential locations.
