Motorola reiterates industry estimates
Motorola still expects 2001 global industrywide unit sales at the low end of its range of 380 million to 400 million. That estimate was consistent with Nokia's estimate of 380 million units late last month. Mike Zafirovski, president of Motorola's personal communications sector, which makes the phones, said at a Lehman Brothers telecommunications conference in Florida this week that he expects 2002 global handset sales of 420 million units to 460 million units. Nokia estimated 420 million units to 440 million units.
Zafirovski expected growth in the wireless industry to resume in 2002 after a difficult 2001, a year in which a down economy slowed sales. Motorola sees the U.S., Mexican and Brazilian markets as the best opportunities for growth, and Europe and Korea are seen as the best markets for replacement sales. Zafirovski said China represents an opportunity for both growth and replacement.
