MontaVista upgrades Linux for telcos

MontaVista Software announced Monday that customers can download a release candidate of version 4 of the company's Carrier-Grade Linux Edition, an operating system product geared for telecommunications customers. As expected, it's the first version of the product to use version 2.6 of the Linux kernel.

CGE 4.0 supports several "real-time" features guaranteeing prompt response to important events. The software also meets two specifications relevant for companies building telecommunications equipment: the Service Availability Forum's Application Interface Specifications for high-availability services and the Open Source Development Labs' Carrier Grade Linux 2.0.
