The betas never stop at Microsoft (MSFT).

The company posted the second beta of Windows 98 to its developers' beta site yesterday and sent out CD-ROM copies to its testers, said developers yesterday. Beta 2 includes Preview Release 2 of Internet Explorer 4.0, as well as enhancements derived from feedback that came in from the first beta, which was released at the end of June.

A third beta will follow, Microsoft told developers, to correct further known glitches that were not significant enough to justify delaying the second beta. The final version is not due until the first quarter of next year, according to Jim Allchin, senior vice president of the personal systems and business group at Microsoft.

Code-named Memphis for an extended period of time, the new and oft-delayed version of Windows was officially given the name Windows 98 last week at a conference in Redmond. The release previously had been scheduled for 1997, according to a number of sources and Microsoft executives. Computers using the new OS will not be available until next year.
