Mandrake releases latest Linux version

MandrakeSoft has released version 8.2 of its Linux operating system, the company said Monday. The software can be downloaded or pre-ordered. Version 8.2 includes support for devices that can be plugged in and unplugged while the computer is still running, a better graphical user interface, and an encrypted file system to increase security.

Mandrake, based in France but with North American buyers providing most of its revenue, is asking customers to join subscription-based clubs to pump up its cash flow. Individual club membership benefits include discounts, chat privileges with Mandrake staff and access to discussion groups. Corporate benefits include special product offers, faster software downloads, and a display of sponsors' names on Mandrake products and Web sites.
