Linare launches desktop Linux package

Linare, one of several software makers that are hoping to popularize an easy-to-use desktop version of the Linux operating system, announced the release Monday of its main software package. Named Linare Linux, the product is based on the KDE user interface and includes the OpenOffice productivity package, the Mozilla Web browser and e-mail client, and tools for playing audio files, burning CDs and other tasks.

The software is available from Linare's Web site for $20. Bellevue, Wash.-based Linare emerged earlier this year selling bare-bones $199 PCs with Linux pre-installed.
