Lexar Media sells miniSD worldwide

Lexar Media has begun sellings its miniSD flash memory cards worldwide, the company announced on Wednesday in Hannover, Germany, at the CeBit trade show. The Fremont, Calif.-based company said the card is immediately available in three capacities--32MB ($29.99), 64MB ($49.99) and 128MB ($79.99). The company has been selling its miniSD line in Japan since December last year.

The miniature version of the Secure Digital format was developed to provide a way to store data in cell phones, handhelds and in a range of shrinking digital devices, such as cameras and music players. Lexar Media joins SanDisk, Panasonic and a growing list of other companies in supporting the new, more portable format. Historically, prices for an emerging format have dropped as it has attracted backers and increased sales.
