Lenovo tags OmniVision for camera phones

OmniVision Technologies has inked a deal to supply Lenovo's cell phone business in China with OmniVision CMOS camera chips, the maker of image sensors said Monday. Since late last year, Lenovo has used nearly 2 million OmniVision CMOS sensors, which convert light into digital information. Lenovo, which sells cell phone PDAs like the ET960 Pocket PC, is China's second-largest handset maker, behind Ningbo Bird.

China's camera phone market, currently estimated at 34 million units annually, is growing at a rapid pace. By next year, more than 78 million, or 56 percent of the estimated 140 million handsets sold in China, will have one or more cameras in them, according to Japanese market research company TSR. By 2008, 116 million, or more than 70 percent of all cell phones sold in China, will be camera phones.
