Intel, iAnywhere team up for Wi-Fi

Intel and iAnywhere Solutions released on Monday a hardware and software bundle intended to spur the creation of mobile applications using Wi-Fi wireless technology.

The Wi-Fi Toolkit includes iAnywhere's mobile database and a wireless-ready notebook PC and handheld computer. The toolkit is aimed at software developers building corporate applications that rely on wireless network access. Intel and Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere launched the toolkit at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association ( CTIA) conference in Las Vegas.

The two companies said the combined products will simplify development of corporate Wi-Fi applications, particularly for small and medium-size businesses.

"The Wi-Fi Toolkit will empower a broader set of developers with an established, easy way to extend the reach of their applications beyond the office walls and traditional wired desktop," Jan Jaworsky, senior director of marketing at iAnywhere Solutions, said in a statement.

The bundle includes a series of development tools, such as SQL Anywhere Studio and Sybase Pocket PowerBuilder, and server software for sending data over Wi-Fi networks. On the hardware side, it features a Hewlett-Packard NX7000 notebook built around Intel's Centrino technology, an HP iPaq H5550 handheld based on Intel's XScale processor, and a Cisco Systems Aironet Wi-Fi access point.

Sybase's iAnywhere mobile database last year took the top position in the $700 million market for so-called mobile middleware, or software designed to let employees get wireless access to corporate networks, according to market researcher IDC.

Separately, iAnywhere on Monday announced an update to a mobile sales application built around its software. The Mobile Sales application, which can be embedded within packaged sales applications, gained configuration tools designed to improve navigation.
