Inprise to cut 190 jobs

Inprise reported net revenues of $48.1 million for its fiscal fourth quarter, a decrease of 3 percent compared with the same period a year ago, and announced job cuts.

The computer software maker said it will cut 190 jobs, or 20 percent of its workforce, as it restructures into two divisions.

Inprise said it will take an undetermined first-quarter charge to pay for severance packages and also to write down the value of office buildings that it owns at its Scotts Valley, California, headquarters.

The company, formerly known as Borland, is splitting into two divisions, Inprise and borland.com. The Inprise division will make software that helps different computer systems communicate better.

The borland.com division will offer an Internet site where subscribers can find information about a variety of software and buy products made by Inprise and other companies.

For the quarter, the company recorded net income of $3.5 million, a 379 percent gain compared with net income of $730,000 during the same quarter a year ago.
