Innovations need to work technically, too

In response to the Oct. 16 Newsmakers interview with VeriSign CEO Stratton Sclavos by Charles Cooper, "The cultural divide and the Internet's future":

This guy's agenda is so obvious, you could drive a truck through it without touching the sides.

He is right that there is a problem with the "cultural divide," and it may be the difference between those who believe that public utilities should remain in public hands versus those in favor of privatization. (May I point the finger at the California and New York power shortages?)

The DNS (domain name system) is designed to do one thing, to do it well--and nothing more. Adding to DNS is not innovation if it breaks what's below it. Period.

Innovation suggests doing something creative. Site Finder may have been creative from a business point of view, but from a technical point of view, it was a disaster.
