Hughes adopts satellite broadband standard

Hughes Network Systems, the broadband satellite division of Hughes Electronics, said it will support a technology standard to deliver high-speed Internet access over its systems. Called the Internet Protocol over Satellite (IPoS), the standard lets companies like HNS license technology to deliver broadband through satellite systems. IPoS allows satellite broadband services to work with other IP-based applications such as 802.11b wireless, Internet phone calling, video conferencing and Web browsing.

IPoS was ratified by the Telecommunications Industry Association in December 2003 as a way for satellite companies to offer broadband over a common technical framework.
