Google experiences brief outage

Google's Web site was inaccessible for a brief time Saturday and some visitors reported being rerouted to another site, leading some to believe that the search giant had been hacked.

The site was down from 3:45 to 4 p.m. PDT, Google spokesman David Krane told the Associated Press.

"It was not a hacking or a security issue," Krane told the AP. He said the problem was related to the Domain Name System, or DNS, which matches one's Internet Protocol address to the Web site that the user wants to visit. If the DNS system goes down, Web pages requested usually do not appear or take a long time to load.

"Google's global properties were unavailable for a short period of time," Krane told the AP. "We've remedied the problem and access to Google has been restored worldwide."

Rumors that the site was hacked began when visitors were reportedly rerouted to SoGoSearch.com.

I experienced the outage for gmail
by imsaar May 8, 2005 11:56 AM PDT
Yesterday I tried to check my email on gmail and couldn't access
the gmail website.

It definitely had the symptoms of a DNS problem as I can acess
other websites .

Luckily I had my Mail client setup for google and I was able to fetch
my emails using gmails pop servers.

I also experienced the Google DNS problem. My first impression when the problem occured was that Google was under attack, but then I realized the DNS was not mapping www.google.com (or www.gmail.com) to an IP address, i.e., it was a DNS problem. Access to the Google search page was restored promptly but Gmail took a little longer. I imagine that those who were redirected to other search engines, as cited on the C|Net report, have to check their browsers for hijacking. I suggest logging in download.com and getting hijackthis to fix their browsers. Look for an entry with the address of the surrogate search engine and delete it. Warning: do not attempt do delete any other entry without knowing exactly what you're doing. HijackThis is an excelente program but it is not easy at all to use and potentially dangerous.

Sergio Sousa

This is not a one time only thing. I get an error message when trying to visit Google.com several times a week.
