Giveaways draw surfers to start-ups

Jupiter Media Metrix says that the top 25 newcomer Web sites that debuted in 2000 were driven by viral marketing and traffic-sharing, as well as sweepstakes and promotions. Entertainment and gaming site Grab.com was ranked at the top with 13.5 million unique visitors in December 2000. Traffic to the site increased by 115.8 percent since its debut in March at 6.2 million unique visitors. Half.com, PassThisOn.com, Contentmail.com and Paypal.com followed accordingly. In addition, Jupiter Media Metrix says that Half.com was ranked as top advertiser among the top newcomers. Half.com had 800 million online ad impressions in 2000, and its traffic grew from its debut in March with 1.3 million to 8.2 million unique visitors in December 2000.
