GameStop is obsolete
by morlamweb November 20, 2007 2:59 PM PST
Nowadays I hardly ever buy a game at a retail store like GameStop or Best Buy. I do 90% of my purchases through an online service like Steam. Consider that in November 2004 I bought Half-Life 2 at my local GameStop very soon after it's release; I didn't even think about downloading it, even though it was available at the time. Of the last few games I've bought - the HL2 episodes, FEAR, BioShock, and the Sam and Max episodes - all of them were online.

I mean, seriously - 1992 called, and they want their business paradigm returned to them sometime soon.

Online is cheaper, has a wider variety, and is overall a better deal.

/P

I'd disagree. For PC gamers, yes, most of what you want can be purchased online. But for console gamers, which is the vast majority of customers for GameStop, you don't have the Steam option.

As long as consoles dominate the gaming market, retailers will be viable.

A thought for Gamestop

Perhaps if they'd actually had sales...such as on Black Friday, people would have bothered going. But as it stands they had barely anything on sales, no motivation to shop there.

If I wanted to listen to annoying, elitist geeks argue about which Virtua Fighter character was hotter (true story) while I make my purchase I could probably find a less painful way to do it.
