The first obvious winner? Outkast's "Hey Ya!" is the only multiplatinum single so far, with more than 400,000 downloads. Six songs qualified for platinum, or sales of 200,000 singles, and 45 titles got gold status, for selling 100,000 songs.
These awards "are a reflection of both the commitment of the entire music community to consumer-friendly legitimate digital services and fan appetite for high-quality music," RIAA Chief Executive Officer Mitch Bainwol said in a statement.

I bet Outkast's "Hey Ya!" was made popular by the movie ?50 First Dates? and its previews, which played that song.
Well, anyway... Certificates are a good way to award those musicians and to keep track of all those statistics like whose buying what and where.
It will be interesting to see if MP3 sales ever get as high as traditional music sales. Perhaps MP3 sales will someday surpass CDs...
The certificate standards will need change again... and who knows... maybe by that time they will be awarding Gold iPods instead...

- As the recording industry continues it's never ending abuse of the legal system and making far more money by it than they claim to have lost by file sharing networks, they are now handing out rewards for MP3 downloads.

(4 Comments)This is absolutely insane......
You people have to understand that "THE" thing that the RIAA is trying to do is going to have devistating and catastrophic effects across the entire internet if they are allowed to win this fight.
It is the RIAA that has no morals. It is the RIAA that should be shut down.
