I have always lumped UFO's in with big foot, perhaps leaving open the possibility of some top secret government experiment on an alternate aircraft, smudged photos, pranks, doctored videos, etc.
Lately I have been seeing some of the videos and presentations posted on places like Youtube and Google video and I have to admit I am becoming less sure it is all a lie.
Previously I couldn't comprehend how someone could travel 20 or 30 light years to get here only to fly around a bit, stick a probe in someone?s bunghole and leave.
Even some respected people like Buzz Aldrin and the Apollo 11 crew have claimed to see a UFO.
There are some theory's that Aliens may have assisted humans in some technologies (one of them is explained on a vid from www.IrishUfology.net posted to video.goolgle.com).
Some religious phenomenon?s like the Lost Ark have spawned theory that it was an attempt by aliens to teach humans about electricity.
There are also quite a few reports of UFO sightings after humans demonstrated nuclear capability.
Many reported sightings predate human ability of flight, countering the belief that it is some top secret stealth plane the government is building.
One theory (shown on above mentioned Google vid form IrishUfology) explains that they believe the reason Aliens may be able to reach earth from UFO?s is because they believe they are on a planet in our solar system. This sounds crazy after seeing what Mars looks like and realizing all other planets are inhabitable, but the planet they live on does not necessarily need to revolve around the sun on the same plane as Earth.
To be honest, we have never even given much thought to this idea that there may be other planets with orbits different than earth. Recently a telescope has been launched for the purpose of finding other planets: (<a class="jive-link-external" href="http://space.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn10872&feedId=online-news_rss20" target="_newWindow">http://space.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn10872&feedId=online-news_rss20</a>)
One guy pointed out (same vid) that humans seem to make unusually significant advancements every ~36K years or so. He believes this mysterious planet may pass near Earth every ~36K years explaining this advancement.
We have known for some time that the best way to ensure our survival in case of a huge meteor striking earth is to inhabit another planet. What if we were not the first people to think of it?
What if there is another society watching ours, letting us think outside the box to see what technologies we come up with on our own that they might not have thought of, and occasionally checking our progress helping us with significant advancements along the way?
If nothing else, it would make for a good science fiction book.
An alien artifact programmed to cultivate intelligent life spurs on the evolution of one of the great ape (that'd be us) then checks in every few thousand years to confirm progress or give another evolutionary push.
All three books span human history from the discover of tools and meat on through to a fantasticle future where even exposure to space is simply a medical injury that can be treated. It kept me reading on the subway for a few months anyhow.
Try to keep an open mind though. Ghosts may be nothing but to presume we're the most intelligent the expanses of space have to offer is rather arrogant, even for us increadably arrogant fifth children of the great ape family. My belief is that there's something more advance than us out there. It may have been spotted a few times but for the most part, it's smart enough to stay the away from us still in our evolutionary infancy.

does not mean Extraterrestrial Vehicle.
Knowing about unidentified aircraft sightings can be very useful. It can be in affects of government conspiracy, it makes it publicly available to see how attentative the public is. If there is authorized or unauthorized aircraft activity in a specific area, it can be investigated. Extraterrestrial air craft, local government air craft, foreign government air craft, or things entering the atmosphere which should not be doing so, i.e. shooting stars, fallen satelites, or debris from space launch accidents.
Organizations like the History Channel wouldn't be able to glean as much info as they do from the Freedom of Information act, unless the powers that be didn't want them to.
By now, if you were to ask the average person if they would be shocked if aliens were proven to exist, I would bet the answer would be no. They still might not admit they believe in aliens in a social situation for fear of being alienated (no pun intended), but they still are probably agnostic about it in the back of their minds.
The evidence that we are given is becoming more and more credible over time as we become a space faring race ourselves (citizens are now starting to reach orbit).
It is my belief, that the powers that be will feel that we are ready to know the truth in the next few years.
There is way to much evidence already for aliens to be nonsense. High ranking military people have been involved in UFO encounters, NASA has been involved as per recordings, numerous pilots have encountered UFO's and spoken about it on flight recorders (black boxes). The list of credible sources is very extensive. Also, there was the American military project Blue Book, whose specific purpose was to assess the threat of UFO's; it was cancelled in 1969. Why would they have had such a project if there were no UFO's?
I don't believe it's an accident that we are being shown this evidence as of late.
Sightings of aliens have gone back before biblical times as per paintings and such. If they wanted to hurt us, it would seem that they would have done so by now.
I don't know about the abduction thing, but it's pretty evident that aliens are real and most of them seem pretty peaceful.
