Fox Filmed Entertainment is open to a deal with Apple Computer's iTunes music and video service, its co-chairman said Thursday. "Of course, we'd be open to that. We believe it would be a great opportunity," James Gianopulos said at the Reuters Media and Advertising Summit.
Apple recently began selling some ABC TV network shows and music videos on its iTunes service, for play on its new iPod digital music and video player. Fox is a division of global media conglomerate News Corp., run by Rupert Murdoch. ABC is owned by Walt Disney.
Not only can you buy & download ABC shows like lost for viewing on an ipod, but you can watch them on your computer via itunes. The technology is amazingly smooth at even full screen resolution on my 19" LCD monitor. I just watched an episode of Lost & I was amazed. I hope Fox makes a deal too - I'll look forward to it. :)
Why are you so eager to pay $1.99 for a sub standard product? It is more expensive to download each episode of Lost than it is to buy the box set on DVD! The download version is of inferior quality as it is only 320x240 resolution, so if you want to play it back on your 52" HD TV set its going to look awful. However, should you wish to steal the content via BitTorrent then you get a superior quality file. Normally the MPAA are banging on about how the quality of pirated files are inferior to legitimate ones, this time its the other way round, how crazy is that!
It actually raises an interesting legal question though. If you pay for the content via iTunes and then download it using P2P, would the MPAA still have a case against you?
Simpsons, Family Guy...I wonder if they will let go of older shows too? Titus, That 70's Show, Malcom in the Middle, X Files, Futurama, Undeclared, Freaks and Geeks....hmm...anybody from Fox listening?
There are a awful lot of tv episodes, that FOX has produced, that millions would love to have access to.
FOX, used to be a non-conservative channel. There were some great shows produced there. Not only would it re-vitalize shows people miss. But paves the way for producing new shows with less dependency on advertising dollars. Imagine that, a tv show, where you don't have to worry about the opinions of the advertisers.
Ultimately, the bottom-line will be flood gates opening in this area as a means of distribution. Currently, our selections are limited. The execs blame the guilds, and vice-versa. Come on folks, the guilds are really to blame.
This is a windfall for ABC, and Disney, if they fully pursue it or allow it to flourish. In reality, they've only released a hand full of shows. Five or six I believe (don't care because you get the idea). Yet, in only 20 days time, one million videos were downloaded, at 1.99 each. Seems to me, there is whole lot left to be gained.
Since this is not much more than a rumor it may be too late to be a factor for Arrested Development. I certainoly welcome this possibility because fans of unjustly neglected shows like this could make their voice better heard by purchasing epipsodes for a relatively low cost. If it moves to Showtime the price would be higher per episode. I know there is a question of HD versus the low quality currently at iTMS but AD from iTMS would be better than any show I can think of in HD.
Don't get me wrong. I like the quality of HDTV but AD is one of the few sitcoms that doesn't rely on dimwitted jokes telegraphed with absurd laugh tracks. Don't trust any comedy that uses a laugh track, they are inherently dishonest.
But I'd rather showtime pick it up and watch it in my living room, on my couch. Sure, I'll have to subscribe to showtime, but then again, Arrested Development is worth it. Shame on Fox for causing thsi show to die. It's all their fault. No promoting, bad time slot, moving it for *eck* baseball fo all things. Shame on their execs. May they go broke and homeless for their stupidity!
