of third-party applications to be run on the iPhone is a major
step forward in two key areas.
Firstly, I suspect there's a gazillion enterprise users who would
love to have an iPhone but need to run proprietary software on
their handhelds to tie in with their corporate systems. Steve's
announcement makes a move towards this being reality.
Secondly, Apple are smart enough to know that the first "killer
app" for phones is being able to easily make calls [!] and
moreover that the next killer apps may ormay not come from
within Cupertino - thus opening up the iPhone, in whatever form
they choose do do so - allows the thousands of independent
developers to work their magic.
Roll on WWDC and June 29th...
