I play MMRPGs. The only people in these games that would support the above belief are kids, who's first instinct is to make a character that shares their own gender.
I agree with the player quoted in your story. If I have to look at the back of a character for hours while playing, I would rather look at a female. I believe most males understand this and make no assumptions as to the gender of a characters operator. If they call you "her" it's because the character is a her, not because they're assuming the operator is a her.
This has been going on since role playing games were invented, so now it's a story? Someone just notice it? We all know this is 2006 right?
